Feed Your Mind
This is a response to an email I received on asking advice to overcome creative blocks. I felt it worth publishing here.
“Creative blocks are a natural part of this process as anyone who does anything creative knows. One is not ‘on’ all the time. Here are a few of the things I do to get myself out of a rut.”
Have a purpose -Why are you doing what you are doing? Be sure to begin with the end in mind on what you want. This purpose does not prevent blocks, but gives the power to get through them. If you are not enjoying what you are doing and do not have a purpose for doing it, life is going to suck. Yes your life.
Keep on Keeping on – With that said purpose in mind, when blocks arise… do something, do ANYTHING to just keep hacking at the problem. Even if it is something uncreative, there are usually creative and uncreative parts of any project. Keep doing whatever you can while you think of a solution.
Keep learning something new in your field every day – Seriously, take some time each and every day to sharpen your skills even .001 percent. Years down the road when you have amassed a lot of skill, .001 percent at that level is a lot compared to the person just starting out. Its effects are compounding. Watch youtube videos in your field to get inspiration.
Liberate yourself to acquire the tools you need to have the most fun – If the tools are hardware, software, or education (or all of them), liberate yourself to spend the time, money, and energy required to obtain them.
Have fun in life – The rest of the valley prepares one to climb the next peak. If you are constantly climbing peaks you will come to hate them rather than enjoy their victory. Eventually you may see a peak that is too hard for you to climb at your current worn out level.
Learn how you work best – I have learned that my body has visceral reactions to deadlines concerning creative projects. Every time I have a self imposed or not self imposed deadline, I waste more energy thinking about how stressed I am than I put into the projects. If you enjoy what you are doing (not trying to avoid it) then you will still get things done in a timely fashion.
Alternate creative activities throughout the day with something mechanical if possible. – Doing constant creativity can usually lead to burn out, but if you mix it in with something mechanical, even monotonous uncreative work that keeps leading you toward you goal it provides a good brain break.
I can hardly think of another way a person can make so much of a difference in the world than going vegan.
One lifestyle path, not needing the actions of anyone else which has innumerable consequences
This article will not site any studies, lay out any disputable statistics, or otherwise suggest anything subtle and hard to detect. When looked at from even an “armchair” perspective, the conclusions are obvious.
Vegansim can solve or help significantly solve several of today’s most pressing problems.
1) Cost of Health Care
2) World Hunger
3) Greatly aid in cutting back pollution
First of all lets think about the cost of health care. Now its well known that one can be a junk food vegan and that all vegan food is not necessarily a “health food”. There are vegan cakes, pies, “n-ice cream”, fried food, sugar, preservatives, snack crackers and cookies.
Having said this however, ask yourself this question. Would the cost of health care be far less expensive or far more expensive if everyone in your country were vegan? The answer is still obvious. The cost of health care would plummet.
If everyone switched to a plant based vegan diet and brought consciousness to their actions, it is my opinion that incidences of heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, along with many other preventable illnesses would be drastically reduced.
Something strange might arise, health care might become so inexpensive that there might be an abundance of resources to treat all those with genetic and less preventable illnesses of all types.
The debate of universal health care in the united states and other countries is a heated one where people try to distribute extremely limited resources and expensive treatments. The cost of funding this is already astronomical and growing. Even if we only lessened the incidence of heart disease and obesity, just imagine the cost savings.
One does not even have to be a “health nut” while on a vegan diet to overall eat much better and be far more healthy.
Second of all, veganism helps solve the issue of world hunger and the increasing cost of food.
People in western countries only enjoy the amount of meat they currently eat at the current price because of intensive factory farming of animals, and the use of agricultural land to feed these animals that could be feeding many times more people.
Just think about how much more a cow or even a chicken has to eat to make a relatively small amount of food for people. These cows are not being fed grass and grazing upon the open hills, nor are the chickens eating various seeds and insects from the ground. They are both being fed corn and soybeans (among other grains and even ground up pieces of cow and chicken). These plants could be used much more efficiently to feed people instead.
This would create a large surplus of some plant based foods decreasing the prices around the world dramatically. Again, no studies or statistics are needed because its so obvious.
If everyone in India and china adopted the same diet as Americans (as they increasingly are), the current american food model would quickly become unsustainable.
What if this simple action of veganism not only decreased the food prices for everyone in the world… but helped cure one of the most disgusting problems of all… The sad truth is that currently people in the world do not starve because there is not enough food. They starve because they can not afford the food that is available and all around them.
Lastly bring your attention to the cutting back of pollution and use of energy and water sources in general.
Weather you care or believe in human caused global warming or not is irrelevant. Everyone on the other hand wants to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and have energy be affordable to do what they want with it.
The obvious fact is, there is tremendous waste in the consumption of animal products as opposed to a vegan diet. All of the fuel, water, and human labor used to manufacture and transport the food to animal farms, the fuel, water, and human labor to manufacture and transport the animals to make into food for humans would be conserved. The lakes of animal manure and factory farm waste, no more.
Animals must eat may times the weight in food to produce the same amount of food for humans. This means that all of the inefficiencies and use of resources that go into this process is horridly wasted in relation to its plant based alternative.
Just think for a moment of all the meat consumed in the world. All the fast food restaurants, all of the slow food restaurants, all of the grocery stores, everything of that nature. Each bit of meat, dairy, and all animal products represent a mountain of wasted resources. Who knows, with such inefficiency eliminated… there might just be abundance for all.
This is of course just the tip of the iceberg. It does not even touch on such obvious topics as the hormones pumped into meat, non objective topics such as ethics, resistant germs from antibiotics, etc..
There are many other grave problems in the world such as human trafficking and things of that nature that need to be solved. However many of these problems can not be solved without policing, changing of other peoples actions and many things beyond ones immediate control.
In comparison to things like this… all of the problems mentioned in this essay are really an easy fix in which you are either directly part of the cause or directly part of the solution…
What could you possibly have more control over than what you put in your mouth?
This is one topic that has truly changed my life, every day, for what I see as forever.
Anthony Robbins talks about this concept a lot, and put into practice can make or break your life. This needs to be applied across all areas of your phsycial health, relationships, work life/passions, and spirituality.
This is what gives you hope for the future, what makes every day a blessing and exciting. If you are not focusing on the core areas in all of these aspects of life and growing in them (not just staying still), then you are slipping.
Nature lets nothing stand still, nature always erodes what is stagnant and breaks down what does not have energy put into it. This is the concept science knows as “entropy’. Entropy is counteracted by putting energy into a system, the right energy that builds things up of course… you can also speed entropy along by helping it break things down.
So build up your physical health by putting energy into it…if not, you are slipping. Put energy into exercise, put consciousness into food and food choices. Consciousness is mental energy, just as potent as any other type of energy on the realms it operates on.
Put energy into your relationships. Weather it be with a partner, family, friend, your higher self, your town, city, country, world… If the relationships are not growing, they are slipping.
Put energy into getting better in the mental realm, at your work, occupation, passions. Get better at what you do every day. Love to get better at it. There is always work in this world for a master, not only that but a master is sought out, looked for carefully admist the crowds, and paid dearly for.
Put energy into your spirituality, to your giving to the world, your ultimate connection with your higher self and “The All” or God. Put energy into this relationship and it will pay many fold. This ultimate connection with “the all” and the love of oneself (once you know what “yourself” is) is ultimately the only thing that matters in life. Everything else is necessary and is part of loving oneself, but it is just that…part of loving oneself.
I hope you find this useful
So here is a revelation of the ages. Ponder this with me please. I have been listening to a lot of the teachings of Abraham (as channeled through Ester Hicks) recently and there is one major point that they teach that the entire world should wake up to. That is the concept of the Emotional Guidance System.
Just go with it here for a second. What if we knew before we came into this lifetime that we could accomplish everything our essence set out to do in this incarnation? Although it is not always perfectly easy to connect directly with our spiritual essence in our physical body to find out exactly what we wanted to do, what if we came to this life with a compass?
What if we knew that we would always have a compass to let us know if our actions were in alignment with what would be fufilling to us?
We have this compass!
Its our emotional guidance system.
Whenever we do anything or even think about doing anything, bring consciousness to that action. Make sure to pay special attention to the emotional feeling around that action. It will either feel some degree of “good” or some degree of “bad”. This is our compass throughout life of what we should be doing. If it feels bad, You are Not Supposed to Do it! If it feels Good, then go for it!
Sounds like a no-brainer right?
Here is where it gets complicated.
Our society has conditioned and told us to ignore this divine guidance system and conform to its expectations instead. Bad is often the new Good. We are told to do this or that for some gain even if our emotional guidance system is telling us the opposite. After a long time of this, after a long time of the suppression of the emotional guidance system, even though outwardly everything could seem to be going fine by societies standards, inwardly there will be nothing but discontent.
I am no stranger to suppressing my own emotional guidance system. Sometimes it can be difficult to overcome society’s, your parent’s, your religion’s conditioning and break free to your divine purpose. But once this is done life just gets exponentially better by every degree that you begin to follow this internal compass. After some practice of connecting with your inner self you can even get verbal or symbolic answers to your questions of guidance but by far the easiest and surest way is to follow this emotional compass. It knows true north to happiness every time.
How does this relate to veganism or other aspects of your life that may be difficult?
You may be thinking at the moment “YES! It does not feel good to workout, or try veganism, or any other seemingly difficult tast so I should not!”
“Thank you VBMC and Thank you Abraham for this revelation!”
Well if thats what your emotional guidance system really says then I say follow it.
But make sure you bring perfect consciousness to the emotion. Is it saying it is not right? or is it just Fear?
Fear is something you need to face and work through. That is yourself getting in your own way. Fear will hold you back from getting the life you want, the body you want, the mind you want… everything.
So pay attention to your emotional guidance system and make sure your feelings of good or bad are not coming from a place of fear. If it is, concentrate on it, visualize yourself doing it until the fear subsides…then check your emotional compass again.
One of my favorite authors…Omram Michael Ivanov, a Bulgarian mystic, pointed out something interesting; what happens when a wind blows on a lit candle? The candle flame goes out of course.
What happens when a wind blows on a roaring flame? It get stronger!!!
This concept can be applied to many aspects of our being. When we are weak, a little trouble comes along and is a giant disaster for us. It sets us back, and can even derail an entire process for us and metaphorically “put us out”.
When we are strong however, little troubles are easily conquered and make us stronger in our conquering. When the winds of trouble blow on you, have the steadfast conviction not to let it blow you out. Transform the energy in the trouble into fuel for your fire!
I have become a huge fan of personal development audio over the last year or so.
Personal development audio books have nourished my mind as I prepare food, clean the house, go for a walk, drive, and working out.
Some of my favorite personal development authors are Anthony Robbins, Steve Pavlina, Stephen Covey, zig ziglar and many others. You can download Steve Pavlina’s podcast series for free on his site. Many others I have checked out from the public library!
If you have not listened to personal development audio in the past, I would highly recommend it for anyone wanting to bring more conscious direction to their lives.
I have found this to be incredibly useful to focus on the mind nourishing, dream life building, empowering, and growth inspiring ideas insted of my mind’s ceaseless chatter. As another one of my favorite authors, Swami Nithyananda, once wrote… “I only talk so your mind shuts up”. When you are listening to interesting engaging ideas, your mind stays quiet. You leave the task with mind fully nourished.
Listening to audio books in my spare time has allowed me to “read” (listen to) an incredible number of books in a short amount of time. I have gained so much insight from such topics as starting businsses, setting goals, relationships, the nature of the universe, spiritual development, living a principal centered life, neuro linguistic programming, why people behave how they behave, etc… This is just a small piece of the information I have gained. Even non personal development audio books have been good. The epic of Gilgamesh (one of the first stories ever written), books on the dead sea scrolls, Plato and Aristotle, Alternative Energy… and more!
Hopefully you have seen how useful it can be to expand your mind as you expand your cooking and other areas of your life!
